Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive form of healthcare that has been in existence for more than 3,000 years. It theorizes that the body is made up of qi (pronounced "chee"). This is the life energy that exists in everyone and every thing.

The qi travels along 12 primary channels or meridians within the body. As long as there is balance between these meridians, then health presides. When imbalances occur -- due to many factors such as diet, lifestyle and emotions --, then the body will begin to exhibit symptoms.

By using the various modalities within Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, bodywork, exercise and diet therapy) balance is able to be restored and symptoms alleviated.

Your practitioner will perform a detailed system of pulse and tongue analysis, medical history, and other assessments. The resulting diagnosis is essential to developing an individualized treatment strategy. This strategy may incorporate one or all of the modalities found in Traditional Chinese Medicine in order to return the body to a state of health.

TCM looks to see the relationship between the symptoms. Because of this, no two individuals are treated exactly the same.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one way of restoring balance to the body by redirecting the flow of qi. Areas that are blocked are opened, areas that are depleted are strengthened. As the body regains its strength and free flow of qi, the symptoms subside.

Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin (hair-like) stainless steel needles into acupuncture points along the meridians of the body. The tiny needles are disposable and sterile. While it is common to feel a sense of heaviness where the needles are inserted, there should be very little to no discomfort whatsoever. Many patients fall asleep or deeply relax during treatments.

Chinese Herbal Supplements
Herbal medicine is another component of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is used to internally rebalance and regulate energy, allowing the body to acheive a balanced state of health. Chinese herbal treatments are taken in whole food form; whole roots, stems and leaves are used to create formulas. This approach allows for fewer side affects than pharmaceuticals.

Tui Na
Tui Na is a form of Chinese bodywork. Different from other forms of massage, it has very specific hand movements which work to regulate the qi. It is often incorporated into the treatment strategy along with acupuncture.

Diet Therapy
Chinese diet therapy is used to support the flow of qi and nourishment to the body. Foods are looked at from the perspective of flavor and energetic qualities. For instance, if an individual is deficient within particular meridians, specific foods may be recommended based on that foods ability to support the deficient meridian.
